Norwegian Angelica
Angelica archangelica
Angelica arcangelica, well known for decorating puddings and cakes, is a tall, fragrant perennial herb featuring attractive, rounded umbels 10 to 15 cm in diameter, with small white or green flowers blooming early in the summer. The umbels emerge from bright green, hollow stems that are sometimes purple and develop into seeds that ripen in late summer. They rise above bright green leaves that reach 2 feet (60 cm) in length. These leaves consist of three finely serrated leaflets and serve as a beautiful backdrop for other plants. · As an ornamental plant, Angelica is a remarkable herb that provides height and structure. Rich in licorice flavor, all parts of this aromatic plant have long been cultivated for culinary and medicinal purposes. The leaves are excellent for salads. The stems can be crystallized into sugar for cake decoration, and the seeds are used in flavored liqueurs (Chartreuse). The roots were believed to protect against infectious diseases and other epidemics, and to alleviate the symptoms of various illnesses; thus, it was named Angelica due to the virtues of the angel. · Angelica is a hapaxans perennial that blooms profusely from early summer to mid-summer. It is characterized by flowering and fruiting each year, after which it grows to ground level before being replaced by new growth the following year. · It grows vigorously to a height of 90–180 cm (3–6 feet) and spreads up to 60–90 cm (2–4 feet). This plant is a biennial that produces leaves in its first year and flowers in its second. The plant can last for 3–4 years, especially if the flowers are removed. · It thrives best in fertile, medium-to-moist soil in a location that is either sunny or partially shaded. The plant grows best in the shadiest and coolest parts of the garden, especially during hot summers. Keep the soil from drying out. Staking may be necessary on exposed sites. · It is resistant to deer and attracts butterflies and beneficial insects. · Easy to grow, Angelica is a welcome addition to flowerbeds, borders, woodlands, natural areas, aquatic gardens, and near stream or pond banks. · The plant can grow from seeds, and under optimal growing conditions, it may sow seeds on its own if the flowering umbels are not removed. It can be propagated by root cuttings taken in the second year. · Cut after flowering. · When young, it is susceptible to damage from slugs, snails, aphids, leaf blight, and powdery mildew.
