Dutch company Dümmen Orange recently unveiled a new Aglaonema variety called ‘Big Apple.’ As a new foliage plant product featuring adaptability to low-light indoor environments and contrasting leaf colors, it is expected to fuel competition among colorful leaf varieties in the European indoor plant distribution market.

Dutch foliage plant breeding and production company Dümmen Orange recently unveiled a new Aglaonema variety called ‘Big Apple.’ Aglaonema is a representative foliage plant that grows relatively stably even in low-light indoor environments, and new variety announcements are continuing amidst expanding demand for colorful leaf indoor plants, particularly in Europe and North America.

According to the company, ‘Big Apple’ is a variety characterized by a vivid green background with contrasting red central veins and leaf patterns. The key differentiator presented is the enhanced leaf color clarity and display effect, which are important sales factors in the indoor interior plant market. Aglaonema is evaluated as a crop that can be widely commercialized, ranging from small pots to medium-to-large potted products, due to its relatively low maintenance burden and excellent adaptability to indoor distribution. The unveiling of this new variety is significant not only for its ornamental value but also in terms of distribution. In the European indoor plant market, despite the recent slowdown in consumption, buyer preference for rare colored-leaf varieties and easy-to-maintain indoor plants continues. ‘Big Apple’ is interpreted as a variety capable of increasing visual attention in garden centers, plant shops, and interior distribution channels through color contrasts that differentiate it from existing green-dominated varieties. In the domestic market as well, Aglaonema is a consistently distributed item due to its image as an indoor air purifier and its adaptability to low light intensity. However, further verification is required as actual domestic introduction, supply timing, and distribution methods may vary depending on the importer and production partner operations. The industry believes that stability in indoor distribution during high temperatures, leaf color expression, the time required for potting to complete, and convenience for consumers will be key factors for future market success. Recently, in the floriculture and indoor plant sectors, competition for variety differentiation has become increasingly pronounced, not only in cut flowers and flowering plants for flowerbeds but also in indoor foliage plants. In particular, new varieties possessing both marketability and productivity—such as leaf patterns, color, low-light adaptability, and cultivation uniformity—are attracting the attention of distributors and retail channels, raising interest in whether ‘Big Apple’ will actually spread commercially.
