Canadian Chae Jin-mok
Amelanchier canadensis
Amelanchier canadensis (Canadian Serviceberry) is a large, dense, upright, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with a delicate, dome-shaped crown. In mid-spring, small, slightly fragrant, star-shaped white flowers bloom in attractive upright inflorescences just in front of the leaves. It is attractive to pollinators, and in early summer, small, edible bluish-green berries appear. The berries are used in jams, jellies, and pies and are highly valued by both birds and humans. The medium-green leaves are slender, serrated, and oval-shaped, turning into colorful shades of yellow, orange, and red in the autumn. Thanks to its elegant growth habits and light gray bark adorned with charcoal gray stripes, the plant remains attractive even after the leaves have fallen. It is an excellent plant to enjoy year-round and is used around ponds, lakes, and streams, as well as in wetlands and swamps. · It grows to a height of 25–30 feet (7–9 m) and a width of 15–20 feet (4–6 m). · This plant, which prefers locations ranging from sunny to shady, grows easily in moist, well-drained acidic soil. The best berry production and autumn coloration occur in sunny areas. It adapts to both wet and dry places and various soil types. · It is a low-maintenance plant and generally free of pests and diseases, but be aware of fire blight. · Suitable for specimen plants, hedges and screens, or embankments and slopes. It can be used for erosion control. It is excellent for naturalized or native gardens, or along riverbanks and ponds. · Propagates by seeds, semi-stemmed cuttings, or by removing suckers in winter. · Native to eastern North America.
