Hydrangea 'Candlelight'
Hydrangea paniculata
'Candlelight'
Growth Characteristics: Candlelight Hydrangea is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Saxifragaceae family, characterized by conical, cream-colored flowers that bloom from summer to autumn. Over time, the flowers gradually turn a soft pink. This variety grows to a height of approximately 1.2 to 1.5 meters, forming a rounded shape with broad branches. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and is relatively resistant to cold. Propagation Methods: Candlelight can primarily be propagated by cuttings and division. For cuttings, prepare 10-15 cm long cuttings from soft branches in spring or summer and allow them to root in water or soil. Division is performed by separating a well-grown mother plant in spring or autumn. Cultivation Methods: Candlelight grows best in well-drained soil and particularly prefers slightly acidic soil. The planting location should receive at least 4 hours of sunlight per day. After planting, it should be watered sufficiently, and watered periodically during the dry summer months. Pruning the branches appropriately towards the end of winter each year helps maintain abundant blooms. Uses in the Garden: Candlelight adds a unique charm to the garden, especially in summer and autumn. Thanks to its dense inflorescences and changing flower colors, it is excellent for use as a centerpiece or border plant in flowerbeds. It creates a beautiful landscape when planted in harmony with other tall vertical plants or combined with plants that contrast with white or blue colors. Major Pests and Control Methods: Major pests include aphids, butterfly moth larvae, and powdery mildew. Aphids can be controlled by spraying with soapy water or using chemical insecticides if necessary. Larvae can be removed from the plant or treated with eco-friendly agents. Powdery mildew can be prevented by creating a well-ventilated environment and removing diseased leaves; in severe cases, use an appropriate fungicide. Regular monitoring and care of the plant can minimize damage from pests and diseases.
