Brain cactus Multicostatus
Stenocactus multicostatus
Growth Characteristics Multicostatus is a cactus primarily native to Mexico, featuring a circular stem with numerous grooves. Its growth rate is relatively slow; it typically enters a dormant period during the summer and grows actively in the spring and autumn. It grows healthily with ample sunlight and requires sufficient ventilation. Propagation Methods It is mainly propagated by seeds, and it is best to sow them in early spring. After sowing, cover the seeds lightly and water carefully to prevent the soil from drying out. A warm and humid environment must be maintained to increase the germination rate. Cultivation Methods - Sunlight: A location receiving plenty of bright sunlight is ideal. However, strong direct sunlight should be avoided during midsummer. - Temperature: It prefers an environment of 10–35°C, and the minimum winter temperature must be maintained above 10°C. - Watering: Water when the soil dries out in the summer, and rarely water in the winter. Overwatering should be avoided. - Soil: It is recommended to use well-draining soil specifically designed for cacti. Uses in the GardenDue to its unique and beautiful appearance, the Cactus pygmy is widely used for gardens and indoor decoration. It can be planted in rock gardens or alongside other succulents to create various landscaping effects. Important Pests and Control Methods - Fungal Diseases: These can occur due to excessive moisture. Prevent them by ensuring good drainage and ventilation, and use antimicrobial agents if necessary. - Shellworms: Improve ventilation between plants and control them by spraying insecticides if needed. - Management of Diseased Parts: Promptly cut off diseased parts and apply a fungicide to the affected area. For effective growth, matching environmental conditions, regular observation, and proper care are essential.
