Ganghwa Astragalus
Astragalus sikokianus
Ganghwa Hwanggi (Astragalus sikokianus) is a plant native to various environments in Korea. Growth Characteristics: It is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows to a height of approximately 30–50 cm. It thrives primarily in full sun and partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. Flowers typically bloom from spring to early summer and are light purple in color. Propagation Method: It can be propagated by seeds. Seeds can be harvested in the autumn and sown directly, or germinated in the spring and transplanted. To increase the germination rate, it is recommended to soak the seeds in water for about a day. Cultivation Method: When cultivating, select well-drained soil and plant in a sunny location. Water sufficiently, but be careful not to overwater. Use slow-release fertilizer in the spring to replenish soil nutrients. Garden Uses: It is suitable for planting in garden flowerbeds or along borders. It can be mixed with other perennial herbaceous plants to create color contrast. Additionally, it is resistant to pollution, making it useful for urban gardens. Important Pests and Control Methods: Although it is relatively resistant to pests, aphids or scale insects may occasionally appear on the leaves. To prevent this, periodic observation and the use of eco-friendly insecticides are recommended, and utilizing natural predators such as ladybugs can also be helpful. To prevent diseases, it is important to ensure good drainage and maintain sufficient spacing between plants to facilitate air circulation.
