Western Red Cedar 'Tater Tot'
Thuja occidentali
'Tater Tot'
Thuja occidentalis 'Tater Tot' is a round-shaped dwarf conifer primarily cultivated for ornamental purposes. This variety grows relatively slowly, and mature trees reach a height of approximately 60 to 90 cm, characterized by their small and dense appearance. Growth Characteristics: Tater Tot thrives in full sun, but can also grow in partial shade. It grows best in well-drained soil and generally prefers slightly moist environments rather than dry conditions. It is highly cold-hardy and tolerates cold climates well. Propagation Method: It is primarily propagated by cuttings. Healthy branches are cut and propagated in late spring or early summer. Selected branches are cut to an appropriate size and planted in a mixture of sand and peat moss. Rooting is successful if even humidity and temperature are maintained during this process. Cultivation Method: Plant in well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting. Avoid excessive watering thereafter. Since it grows slowly, special pruning is not necessary; however, light pruning is possible if it grows into an undesirable shape. Garden Use: Its small, round shape makes it suitable for garden edges or small flower beds. Additionally, it requires almost no pruning, making it easy to maintain and ideal for beginners. It blends harmoniously with other shrubs or perennials, allowing for diverse garden designs. Important Pests and Control Methods: Tate Tots are relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but root rot can occasionally occur due to excessive moisture. To prevent root rot, plant in well-draining soil and avoid overwatering. Additionally, rare pests include aphids and spider mites; upon early detection, they can be controlled using soapy water or eco-friendly insecticides.
