White Dragon Cactus
Cleistocactus straussii
Growth Characteristics: This is a vertical cactus native to the highlands of Argentina and Bolivia, featuring silvery-white spines and columnar stems. It generally grows up to 2–3 meters tall and produces long, red, tubular flowers during the summer. It prefers plenty of sunlight and dry environments. Propagation Methods: Propagation is primarily done by seeds and cuttings. For seed propagation, wash the seeds thoroughly on a cloth or filter paper, dry them, and plant them in well-draining potting soil. For cutting propagation, cut a stem, let it dry completely, and then plant it in well-draining soil. This method is performed during the warm season. Cultivation Methods: It thrives in well-drained soil. It should be grown in a location with plenty of light, but strong direct sunlight should be avoided. Watering should be done appropriately according to the dry climate; generally, water is given periodically during spring and summer, and watering is reduced during winter. When growing indoors, it is recommended to place it in a sunny spot, such as by a window or on a balcony. Uses in the Garden: It is popular for garden landscaping due to its unique appearance. Placing it in a dry garden with plenty of stones or sand can create a natural spectacle, and it also works well alongside other succulents. Important Pests and Control Methods: Major pests include scale insects and root worms, which can damage the leaves and stems. In the early stages of infestation, pests can be physically removed or wiped off with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. In severe cases, appropriate chemical insecticides must be used. Additionally, since overwatering can cause root rot, it is important to manage drainage and ventilation thoroughly.
