Sofia Cherry Laurel wins People’s Choice Best in Show at the 2026 Farwest New Varieties Showcase
Digger magazine reported on September 9, 2026 that Sofia® Cherry Laurel was selected as People’s Choice Best in Show in the 2026 Farwest Show’s New Varieties Showcase. The show was held from August 26 to 28, 2026 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, and the winner was announced on the final day based on attendee voting.
The winning plant is Prunus laurocerasus ‘Zsofi’ PP33411, and Concept Plants and Woodburn Nursery & Azaleas are identified as the introducing and submitting companies. According to Digger, it was one of 26 new selections presented in the 2026 Farwest showcase.
Concept Plants describes Sofia® Cherry Laurel as an evergreen shrub with a naturally dense, rounded habit. Its listed characteristics include short internodes, strong branching, and narrow glossy dark green foliage, with suggested uses including hedges, topiary, landscape plantings, and containers.
Concept Plants states that the variety reaches approximately 4 to 5 feet in height and width after five years. The recommended conditions are moist, fertile, well-drained soil, full sun to partial shade, and USDA Zone 6a.
The result highlights how compact habit, lower maintenance requirements, and suitability for urban and container planting are becoming important criteria in new ornamental shrub evaluation. Digger also reported that Saturnalia™ American hybrid oak received the Judges’ Best in Show award in the same showcase.
